Shaun Corning joins the Chiefs’ coaching staff for the 2020 season as a Volunteer Assistant Coach. He will be working as Waubonsee’s Strength and Conditioning coach and aiding the Chiefs’ pitchers whenever possible. Corning brings a wealth of playing experience and knowledge to Waubonsee’s dugout.
Corning was a three-time All-Conference pitcher at Portage (WI.) High School, helping the Warriors win three straight league titles, while also earning Second Team All-State honors as a junior and First Team All-State his senior year in 2002. He capped off his final prep season by tossing a one-hitter with 18 strikeouts in the Regional title game on the way to finishing the season with a 1.03 earned-run-average over 62 and a third innings. As a matter of fact, Corning still holds the Warriors’ records for career wins (19), innings pitched (179) and strikeouts (277). He went to Madison (WI.) College in 2003 and was drafted later that year by the Baltimore Orioles in the 39th round of the MLB June Amateur Draft. He chose to stay in school and pitched the next two summers in the Northwoods League for the Mankato (MN) Moondogs and the Madison (WI) Mallards, winning the league championship in 2004.
Corning then transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (UWP) where he was a key part of the Rangers’ 2005 team that went 45-18. He set a program record that spring by striking out 82 batters and earning 9 wins on the mound to help UWP win the Great Lakes Valley Conference title and reach the NCAA Division II North Central Regional championship game. That team was inducted into the Rangers’ Hall of Fame in 2016. Corning later earned a Sports Management Degree from UWP and became a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He eventually underwent Tommy John elbow surgery and tried to continue his playing career, pitching for the independent minor league Joliet Jackhammers and Sioux Falls (SD) Canaries before hanging up his cleats.
Corning served as pitching coach at Chicago Christian High School for a season, and was the Head Sophomore Baseball Coach at Lisle High School. In addition he served as a Volunteer Strength and Conditioning Coach for Waubonsee Softball in 2018. Away from the field Corning is a Sales and Support Manager for AT&T, and does individual pitching lessons for kids of all ages. He and his wife Kristen, the Chiefs’ head softball coach, live in Elburn and have three children, Kabella (9), Miken (5) and Parker (4) with a fourth child expected later this summer.
