Chiefs take 2nd in final ISCC match

(Bristol, IL.) – Waubonsee Community College hosted the final Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) golf match of the 2025 season on Wednesday afternoon at Blackberry Oaks Golf Course. Coach Dave Stephens' Chiefs turned in their best round of the season as they compiled a team score of 316 to finish second on the day. Waubonsee's best showing of the year knocked Oakton Community College, which ended the day three strokes behind the Chiefs, down to third place and denied the Owls of a second straight outright ISCC title. Elgin Community College won the day with a score of 303 and grabbed a share of the conference championship with Oakton.

Ryder Zeluff and Joe Barbush each finished with a 6-over par 78 to lead Waubonsee. Zeluff posted a 37 at the turn, while Barbush shot a 38 on the back nine. Justin Winters persevered through a couple rough holes on the front nine to card a 7-over par 79. Brian Davoust, the Chiefs' leader throughout the season, fired an 81 on the day and finished fifth overall with a 75.0 average over the five conference matches to earn All-ISCC honors. Sam Gonzalez completed his round with a 90, while Trevor Mirra turned in a 94 and John Mattiuz finished with an even 100. Lucy Michaels, one of three female golfers participating, booked a 58 over nine holes of play.

Elgin's Nooa Hakala took medalist honors by carding a consistent 34 before and after the turn, finishing with a 4-under par 68 to book one of the top scores in ISCC history. The freshman from Huntley, who took the ISCC Golfer of the Year award, finished three strokes off the all-time mark of 65 set by Lake County's Matt Golding in 2021. Elgin's fifth golfer Ethan Ward booked the surprise round of the day, finishing second on the leaderboard by firing a 1-under par 71 to help key the Spartans' victory. Moraine Valley Community College finished fourth with a score of 322 and the College of Lake County was a distant fifth ending the day with a 364. The Chiefs are set to resume competition again in April of 2026 with their sights set on qualifying for the NJCAA Division II National Tournament in May.
