(Sugar Grove, IL.) – Waubonsee Community College men's basketball team overwhelmed visiting Kishwaukee College on Tuesday evening in Erickson Hall Gymnasium. The Chiefs (8-2) began to pull away after 10 minutes of play and coasted to a 106-79 triumph over the Kougars (2-9). Waubonsee, which entered the evening second nationally in scoring with a 102.1 points-per-game average, eclipsed the 100-point mark for the fifth time in their first 10 games. Waubonsee's balanced attack featured seven different players reaching double figures in points.
A couple of long three-pointers by CJ Savage gave Waubonsee an early 7-6 lead. The Chiefs upped the lead to 15-8 on great ball movement that resulted in a Kamea Chandler triple from the left wing. Moments later Tarell Harding nailed the Chiefs' fifth trey of the game to make it 18-8 after seven minutes of action. Chandler then buried three-pointers on back-to-back trips down the floor as Waubonsee doubled up on the Kougars 26-13 halfway through the first half. The Chiefs continued to own a double-digit lead and Freddy Hassan added to it with a spinning move in traffic for two off the glass. The advantage expanded to 37-21 when Hassan scored on a putback with five minutes left until the break. Waubonsee continued to exert its will as Hassan got to the line to connect on a pair of free throws. A long, fade-away three by JJ Strojinc off the Chiefs' bench again doubled the score at 44-22 and capped off a 16-1 run. Waubonsee head coach Lance Robinson continued to utilize his deep bench to wear down the Kougars. The Chiefs eventually went to the locker room with a 52-25 lead at the intermission by holding the visitors to just 22.9 percent shooting in the first half.
Kishwaukee started the second half with renewed energy as they suddenly found the range from downtown. The Kougars nailed four three-pointers in the initial three minutes of play, equaling as many threes as they had in the entire first half. Chandler and Savage responded with triples of their own while Kishwaukee cut the deficit to 63-43. The three-point barrage continued as Ben Larry splashed the Kougars' seventh long-range bucket in less than five minutes. Chikasi Ofoma then completed a three-point play equalizer to keep it a 20-point spread. A short time later Hassan threw down a two-handed jam off an inbounds play to help spark the Chiefs offense. Waubonsee's lead quickly grew over 30 points at 81-50 with 11 minutes left in the game. The lead ballooned to nearly 40 points after Harding and Chandler scored on back-to-back breakaway lay-ins, making it 94-55 with seven minutes remaining. The Chiefs reached the century mark with four minutes to go when Dirk Nickson drove down the left side of the lane and banked home a shot high off the glass for two. The Kougars closed out the game with a 17-3 run on the Chiefs' reserves to slightly close the gap before the final horn.
Seven Chiefs reached double figures led by Hassan's 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Chandler finished with 17 points nailing five shots from long range. Nickson booked 13 points and three assists, Ofoma added a dozen points and five rebounds, and Strojinc added 12 points as well. Savage chipped in with 11 points and four assists, while James Parker contributed 10 points and grabbed seven boards. The Chiefs shot 80 percent from the foul line, going 28 of 35 overall, and out rebounded the Kougars 48-31 for the game.
